Cultivate Listening Prayer
Week 3 – Day 4
Story
Most of Jonah’s prayers sounded like monologues. When he talked, he imaged God simply sat and listened. After reading about listening prayer, he felt curious and a little skeptical. Could God actually nudge his heart in specific ways? One afternoon, he set a timer for ten minutes after his normal praying and simply sat in silence, asking, “Lord, is there anything You want to bring to mind?” The first minute felt like an age, and the second minute even longer. However, he persisted and eventually a Scripture he had read earlier came to mind, along with the name of a friend he needed to reconcile with. Jonah realized this wasn’t a random daydream; it was the Spirit using the Word to give direction. That simple practice of waiting began to shift his prayer life from one‑way speech to genuine conversation. As Elijah discovered, God is often a small, still voice, and we need to quiet our heart to hear it.
Scripture
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
Application
Listening prayer isn’t about chasing mystical experiences, but about making space for God to put His Word on your heart. Today, after you speak to God, practice being still before Him. You’ re not trying to empty your mind but to be attentive, especially to Scripture brought to remembrance, gentle convictions, or people He brings to mind. Everything you sense must be tested by the Bible, but without silence, you may miss promptings God intends for your good.
Daily Challenge
Action: Spend focused time in silence after you pray. Ask God to bring to mind Scripture, people, or next steps.
Prayer: Jesus, You say Your sheep hear Your voice (John 10:27). Help me recognize Yours. Amen.
